WATER SLIDE ACCIDENTS ON CRUISE SHIPS

Hurt on a cruise ship water slide? Find out if the ride was safe.

Water slides are a popular feature of large cruise ships, and a fast slide can cause serious back, neck and head injuries when something goes wrong. If the slide’s design, upkeep, rules or supervision fell short, however, the cruise line may have to answer for it. Because crew and cameras watch the slides, early action can matter.

Most cruise tickets give you one year to file, and often six months to give written notice. So the clock started the day you were hurt.

HOW WATER SLIDE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN

A water slide is fast, wet and hard to stop.

Riders move quickly through twists, drops and tunnels, and they can hit a wall, another rider or a shallow landing before anyone has time to react. Because slides are wet and often crowded, the way they are built, staffed and kept up matters as much as how a rider behaves.

A cruise line owes the people on board reasonable care. For example, a case may look at how the slide was designed and inspected, how many attendants were on duty, and whether the rules and signs were clear and enforced. In addition, camera footage, maintenance logs and earlier injury reports can show what the line knew and when.

Back & spine injuries

Hard landings and drops that injure the spine.

Head & neck injuries

Collisions with walls, tubes or other riders.

Collisions at the runout

Riders sent down before the landing area was clear.

Friction burns & cuts

Rough joints, worn surfaces or loose fittings.

Too few attendants

Not enough staff to manage the line, the top and the exit.

Weak rules & signs

Unclear height, weight and position rules, or rules not enforced.

Equipment & upkeep problems

Worn seams, poor water flow or parts that were not inspected.

Wet stairs & platforms

Slippery steps to the top and crowded landing areas.

Anywhere else around the slide

Splash pools, queues and more. A hazard isn’t limited to the places listed here.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO PROVE

The slide was not built or run safely.

Under general maritime law, a cruise line owes passengers reasonable care under the circumstances. In a water slide case, that can mean showing the line did not design, maintain, staff or warn about the slide as it reasonably should have, or knew of earlier injuries and did not act. Because many slides are built or serviced by outside companies, a case may also look at who else was responsible.

01

A failure of care

Poor design, weak upkeep, thin staffing or unclear warnings.

02

Notice of the risk

Earlier injuries, reports or complaints the line knew about and did not act on.

03

Injury and loss

Medical records, ongoing care, lost income and the trip itself.

WHAT TO DO AFTER A WATER SLIDE INJURY

Get checked first, then protect the records.

01

Get medical care right away

Back and head injuries can show up later, so get checked even if you feel fine. Keep every bill and record.

02

Report it and ask for the report

Tell the attendants and guest services, then ask for a copy of the incident report. Do not sign statements you have not read.

03

Photograph the slide and signs

Take pictures of the slide, the posted rules, the landing area and your injuries, if you can do so safely.

04

Get names

Collect names for the attendants and guests who saw what happened.

05

Keep your ticket and folio

Your ticket sets the deadlines and the court. Save your folio and messages from the cruise line too.

06

Call a Cruise Injury Attorney

Camera footage, maintenance logs and ride records can be overwritten. We can send a written request that they be preserved.

IN CLIENTS’ WORDS

“Chalik & Chalik is a great firm if you prefer a smaller and more family oriented firm. The paralegals at this firm are an absolute treasure and they will work so hard to help you out and make sure you are taken care of throughout the case and if you have any questions they will help answer any of them.”

Jessica Gutierrez · Google review

“This office is outstanding. The employees here are so kind and professional. They all go way and beyond to assist their clients. But my favorite is Sylvia. I really enjoyed speaking with her. Keep up the great work everyone!!”

QUESTIONS BEFORE THE CALL

Can I sue a cruise line for a water slide injury?

Often, yes, depending on the facts. A cruise line can be held responsible when it fails to take reasonable care, for example with poor upkeep, too few attendants or unclear rules. However, the ticket can limit where and when you can file. For that reason, a free case review is the quickest way to learn where you stand.

What if I went down the slide the wrong way?

The cruise line may say you broke a rule, and fault can be shared. That does not automatically defeat a claim, however. Whether the rules were clear, whether an attendant sent you down, and whether the slide itself was safe can all still matter. As a result, we look at the whole picture.

Do a waiver or posted rules stop my claim?

Not necessarily. Waivers and posted rules are often raised as defenses, but they do not always end a claim. Because the details matter, please keep a copy of anything you signed and call us before you assume anything.

What injuries can a water slide cause?

Falls and hard landings can cause spinal injuries, concussions, broken bones, cuts and burns, and some effects show up days later. A doctor visit matters even if you feel fine. Because medical records help show what happened, please keep every one.

My child was hurt on a water slide. Does anything change?

It can. Claims for children can follow different rules from claims for adults, so please call us even if time seems to have passed. In the meantime, keep your child’s medical records, anything a parent signed and your booking.

How long do I have to file a water slide injury claim?

Most cruise tickets give you one year to file, and often six months to give written notice, both far shorter than usual injury deadlines. Because the clock may already be running, please call as soon as you can. We will then check the dates that apply to your ticket.

What does it cost to find out if I have a case?

Nothing. The case review is free, and if we take your case, we work on contingency, so our fee comes only from what we recover for you. If we do not win, you owe us nothing in attorney fees.
